Water Heater Maintenance Steps

Monday, August 15th, 2016

We’ve written before about the benefits of water heater maintenance, but we never really went into detail about why it was so helpful. A full water heater maintenance appointment is a long process, one that we don’t have the space to get into here. However, we can go over some of the most helpful parts of the process. Let’s take a look at some of the more common water heater maintenance steps, and why they’re a good idea.

How do I Know When to Replace My Water Heater

Monday, June 8th, 2015

Water heaters are pretty sturdy machines. Despite constant exposure to water and daily use, they can last up to 15 years before requiring replacement. No matter how well you take care of yours, though, rest assured that it will eventually need replacement. It is important that you recognize when your water heater is nearing the end of its life. You don’t want your water heater to actually die on you before replacing it with a new one, unless you’re okay with spending a day or two without any hot water. So, let’s take a look at the signs that you need a new water heater.

Why Does My Water Heater Crack and Pop or Make Unusual Noises?

Tuesday, March 10th, 2015

The most common type of water heater found in homes today is the storage tank water heater. Storage tank water heaters contain a large tank filled with water and are usually heated by a gas burner, although an electric heating element is a common alternative.

The way these units work is fairly simple: water naturally rises to the top of the tank via the heat rising principle after it heats up, and it returns to your plumbing system through a tube at the top of the tank. So what would cause such a simple system to make a cracking, banging, or popping noise?

In general, it’s best to ask a technician what’s wrong with your water heater instead of attempting to diagnose the issue on your own. At Total Comfort Inc, we service water heaters in Riverside, but to give you an idea of what may be the issue, we’ve detailed one of the most common problems below.

Signs of Water Heater Problems

Most likely, a crackling or popping noise indicates that sediment has built up in the tank. Minerals like calcium and magnesium are common to the water in our area. As water moves through the water heater tank, it can leave behind deposits, which rumble around at the bottom of the tank. This also decreases the volume of the tank, which can raise pressure levels, affecting performance and potentially leading to a total system failure. If you wait too long to schedule service, it may be too late to flush sediment from the tank, and replacement could be necessary.

Ideally, a technician should flush out your water heater once a year at least in order to avoid premature failure. The technician may recommend flushing the tank more often, if the hardness of your water is at a serious level. You should not attempt this task without the help of a trained technician as it could be difficult or even dangerous, and you may inflict more damage upon the system.

Call the friendly people at Total Comfort Inc for more information about this issue. We have experience with both storage tank and tankless water heaters in Riverside, so we can repair a viable unit or help you to find a suitable and highly-efficient replacement. Count on our technicians for quality service from a name you can trust.
