Is a Water Filter Right for Me?

water-filterWater filtration is a tricky subject, more so than it really should be. In an ideal world, the city in which you live would be able to filter out any and all waterborne contaminants that could harm you before they reach your plumbing system. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The effectiveness of water filtration varies wildly depending on where you live. Even if you live in a really good area for water quality, the municipal water treatment plant will not be able to completely take care of all the potentially harmful issues in the water supply. If you want to be completely certain of the quality of your water, the best thing to do is install a water filtration system in your home. Let’s go over why you might want a water filter in your home, and the different kinds of water filters available.

Why Do You Want a Water Filter, Anyway?

There are a lot of different reasons why you might want to have a water filter installed in your home, depending on the kinds of issues your plumbing system might be dealing with. Possible contaminant issues that you might want a water filter to deal with include:

  • Limescale: Limescale is a kind of mineral deposit that restricts the flow of water through the plumbing system the more it builds up. This can result in having to re-pipe large sections of your plumbing if it isn’t dealt with in time.
  • Toxic Metals: You really don’t want any traces of lead or other harmful metals in your water supply, as even small amounts can be harmful. Unfortunately, it’s quite common for small amounts of these metals to make it through the city filtering process. It would be a good idea to have a filter in place to remove as many of these contaminants as possible.
  • Infectious Organisms: You’re unlikely to get something really dangerously infectious from your water supply, around here. Still, germs of various kinds are absolutely present in drinking water by the time it reaches you. Most people won’t even notice this. But if you have a weakened immune system, it’s not a bad plan to have a water filter installed in your home.

Kinds of Water Filters to Consider

There are a lot of different kinds of water filter types available on the market today, each suited to protecting the home against a different range of contaminants. Reverse osmosis filters, for example, are great for dealing with a wide range of mineral and germ contaminants. Water softeners will neutralize the calcium and magnesium particles that are the cause of hard water, protecting your plumbing from limescale growth. If you’re not sure what kind of water filter would fit your needs best, we encourage you to talk to a professional technician in person about it. They’ll be able to recommend the best system for your situation.
